A (very) brief history of Mauchline
4 December
Mauchline is known for being the town where Robert Burns wrote some of his most loved work, however there is much more to this town which has witnessed battles, hangings and the rise and fall of trade. Cup and Ring markings dating back to the Neolithic Period show that people have been in and around Mauchline for thousands of years. Here are a few dates from the town's history:
681 - Battle between Picts and Scots on Mauchline Moor
1544/45 - George Wishart comes to Mauchline and preaches outdoors after being refused by the local church
1648 - Battle of Mauchline Moor
1685 - Five covenanters hanged
1784 - Robert Burns moves to a farm in nearby Mossgiel
1788 - Robert Burns and Jean Armour's marriage recognised
1829 - Local church opened on site previously occupied by St Michaels Church
March 1846 - Work on Ballochmyle Viaduct begins
Now it's your turn.
Above are just a few important dates - there's far more to the heritage of Mauchline. There's a lot of interest in local history, and lots and lots of local knowledge. And here's your chance to tell everyone about it. If you have an interest in the history of Mauchline - either in general or in specific points - then you can post it here. There must be many, many pictures of the village from throughout the 20th century - why not post them here, and ask other people what they remember?
